When someone thinks about building their own home gym, the thoughts of expenses come up. How much money do you have to invest vs. how much money does the equipment you want cost?
What if I told you ... there is a cheaper way to build your home gym.

Instead of looking into brand new equipment on the brand name's website, how about looking elsewhere? My home gym was built via Facebook Marketplace and Five Below, with a sprinkle of finds from Amazon/Target. Let me tell you, the amount of money that has been SAVED by doing it this way has been amazing.
A pair of used 40lb dumbbells? $30 on FB Marketplace. Two 30lb and one 25lb kettlebell? $65 on FB Marketplace. A home gym tower? $195 on FB Marketplace, while the original price is $600 - and I see free ones listed all the time now, too. I have gotten so many resistance bands from Five Below, Amazon, and Target (I'll link the ones I bought on Amazon below, as well as some of my favourite Five Below finds). And I hate to say it (don't judge!!), but ... I found a 2-tier dumbbell rack at the dump, and it's in perfect condition - FOR FREE.
You'd be surprised with what you can find, and where you can find these things. Always shop cheap, and if you don't find what you're looking for, then opt for the more expensive options later. Some of these pieces of equipment are in excellent condition, almost looking brand new, while others may have wear from regular use, or rust that can be cleaned off with different supplies.
Five Below's selection has changed a bit, and I'm not too thrilled with their shift towards strictly pilates-equipment (nothing against pilates - I love pilates classes, it's just a very limited selection now). I have so many booty bands, long loop bands, weights ranging from 1lb (I got those little weights for my nephew), up to 10lb. They have medicine balls, kettlebells, ankle weights, and they used to have step equipment and mini dumbbell racks, but I haven't seen any steps or racks there for awhile. They have yoga mats, foam flooring (not the best quality, but for some cushion for the tush it works fine), yoga blocks, foam rollers, jump ropes (with or without the rope), and so much more.
Another great addition to a home gym is a suspension trainer, especially if you're working with a small space. You could get TRX straps, or an off-brand suspension trainer. These straps are always very versatile, can be used for upper and lower body workouts, hung from a door or mounted to a wall/ceiling. Suspension training is very underestimated, as it's all bodyweight training, but these workouts can be as hard or as easy as you make them.
Building your home gym can be as expensive, or as inexpensive, as you'd like. Buying smart helps spare costs. If you don't care about all of your equipment matching, then why not spare some money?!
